De Royan Newsletter Spring 2009

   Dear wine friends & family

  Crying Vines

Spring is here, but why is the vine crying? It sounds like a paradox especially after such a cold winter.  Seeing the vineyard cry is the promise that spring is close and that the seasons are turning.  The first sign that the vine has begun its growth cycle after the winter is the presence of sap (tears) on the shoots that had been cut.  When spring arrives the sap rises and runs out of the wounds left from pruning. Over the past 20 days the vineyards have benefited from sporadic radiant sunshine and the buds have started to swell.  One of the first stages of the vine, known as the "green point", takes form through the sign of the first leaf, warming our hearts with the joy of spring.

   Be Fair

Bosman Family Vineyards received Fairtrade certification during the first quarter of 2009. Fairtrade certification means that our vineyards are grown and managed in a way that complies to a clear set of minimum and progressive criteria. This ensures that the conditions of production and trade of our wine grapes are socially and economically fair and environmentally responsible. Bosman Wines will not necessarily be sold under the Fairtrade label, but we are proud to comply with the strict standards of Fairtrade.  You can learn more about Fairtrade on their website www.fairtrade.net

   Awards

Farm Worker of the Year ‘09

Rita Andreas, personnel manager of Lelienfontein Vine Nursery and Bosman Family Vineyards, walked away with the Farm Worker of the Year Award out of a total of 144 entries. Rita, who was born and raised on the farm, started her career as a general worker. She grabbed every opportunity and attended educational courses and seminars to better her position. Her aim as personnel manager is to make a difference in farm workers’ lives. She says she gets her ambition from the motivation she obtains from co-workers, her community and the owners and management of the farm.We are also very proud of the other category winners from our farm. They are: Ivan Thomas (general worker) and Charlene Ferreira (specialist worker) in the Bosman cellar.

SA Terrior Awards 2009

We are proud to announce that our Old Bush Vines Chenin Blanc 2008 won the award for the Top Chenin Blanc in the Paarl District (also including the Wellington, Tulbagh and Franschhoek regions) during the SA Terrior Wine Awards 2009. This is the second consecutive year we have received this award. “I usually inform our customers that this is one of those rare white wines that were made to age and preferably you should hang onto it until it develops further fruit and richness on the palate. But if you can’t control the urge to taste the wine, open it now and enjoy with spicy curries and chilli dishes.” says Carla.

New Vineyards bring forth cool wines

Eight years ago we acquired land in the Upper Hemel and Aarde Valley, namely De Bos Farm. After a great deal of hard work, vines planted on Villafontes, Cartref and Oakleave soil types produced its first wines under the Bosman Family Name. A combination of cool sea breezes and high altitudes, characteristic of the Walker Bay and Babylon Mountain regions, creates the ideal climate for specific grape varieties. Be on the lookout for these special summer wines to be released soon!

New addition to the Bosman Team

Christelle van Niekerk was recently appointed as the Bosman Wine Ambassador and she will be responsible for distributing our wines, national marketing and liaising closely with our customers.

Opening a bottle of wine is an act of optimism. We're confident it will improve the moment, the conversation, the relationships. Each time we pull the cork, it's as if we're saying, Here, I think this will help make things a little better.
