De Royan Newsletter Spring 2008

   Dear wine friends & family

  “….and I’m feeling good”

Spring reminds me of that song Michael Buble sang “It’s a new dawn, it’s a new day, it’s a new life for me, and I’m feeling good” (Feeling Good); and I’m not just talking about those normal spring reasons.

Sure the buds are breaking, the birds are singing, the sun shines brighter and warmer, playing chess turns to tennis and golf, and baby animals are soon seen in ponds and backyards.  Yes, it’s a new springtime for sure. But October signifies even better things for Bosman Wine Lovers: the Bosman Family Wine Club! Since its launch 2 months ago, club members grew at a amazing rate and enjoying the leisurely comfort of Bosman wine being delivered for free to their homes twice a year. Its like sending yourself a Christmas gift every now and again. Contact me on carla@bosmanwines.com and I will email you more info about the Wine Club.

All-in-all there’s just a greater buzz, beep and hoot coming from the cellar and farm as workers are planting stokkies, lorries cajoling up and down the dirt road, wines in barrel see bottle, as do the ones resting in tank, and “ooh and aahs” of people touring and tasting. The whole of wine country is revving up, and waking up, from its winter slumber.

  In full swing...

The winery itself is also casting it`s eyes outside at the weather; pruning was done later in the year and now we’re seeing that great sign of life from the vines, bud break. Unfortunately, spring did not co-operate this year, winter still wanted to stick around, or at least the cooler temperatures did. “Budding, flowering and harvesting will be later than expected. Nevertheless budding is taking place at a tremendous speed and if summer decides to stay for good, then the berries might even be scheduled for picking at the same time as last year” says viticulturist Heinie Nel. “Because of even budding we are anticipating a homogenous crop in our Chenin, which means there will be no need to “throw off” delayed ripening berries”.

  And on the winning side…

We are thrilled with our Gold medal (Category: Unusual red blends) for Adama Shiraz and 3rd place overall in the 2008 Juliet Cullinan Wine Connoisseur’s Award, which truly show case the best in South African winemaking.

Also, Bosman wine participated in the seventh annual African Bush Banquet, held in the Lowveld Bush, Hoedspruit. Sponsoring wine estates were paired with the lodges, allowing the lodge chefs enough time to prepare complementary menus. The best food and wine pairing category has become one of the sought after prizes of the banquet. In the golden orb category, luxury lodge Royal Malewane (voted best safari lodge in the world by Tatler) pairing with Bosman Wine, walked away with the best overall prize, as well as the best service and best food and wine pairing awards. The Bush Banquet has become known as one of SA’s top culinary competitions.

On behalf of the Bosman Family and Team, I wish you all a pleasant and productive spring and year end. I look forward to seeing you at the cellar for a tasting and tour!
